Linda Linda Linda - Movie Review
Ok.. so the movie review is 5 years late.....but...but....well I've only just seen it. Definitely a not to be missed punk band movie from director Nobuhiro Yamashita (A Gentle breeze in the village, Ramblers, No one’s Ark and Hazy Life). Unlike so many other mass produced 'band' movies, this one isn't just the same old..'band makes it against all odds despite all being in a drug induced coma and having instruments made of plasticine or papier mache'. Rather refreshingly, the movie focuses on four high schools girls, who having decided on which three punk songs they wish to perform now have only three days in which to practise and perfect them before playing live in the schools rather modest rock festival. The rock festival is just one of several events that features during the schools Hiiragi-sai cultural festival day which appears to be focused on Korean cultural awareness.

The opening speech to the movie reminded me slightly of the classic movie 'Breakfast Club' and its opening (or closing) speech, even the high school names are similar, although any resemblance between the two movies most certainly ends at that point. The movies band members comprise of 'Shiori Sekine' - the real life bassist from the Baseball Bear, some of the Baseball Bear's music can be heard during the movie, I will post a video tomorrow to enlighten you, if you have no clue who they are. The excellent South Korean born actress 'Du-na Bae' (Air Doll, The Host, Take care of my Cat, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Plum Blossom) as the Vocalist. Although Du-na Bae is slightly older than the other cast band members she outshines them with a wonderfully comical character portrayal, as the Korean exchange student having to learn to sing the Japanese punk songs. Aki Maeda plays the happy and proficient drummer (Silver Rain, Samurai Gangsters and the battle Royale movies) while Yu Kashii (Yellow Tear, Ten dreamy nights, Death Note...) plays the counter balancing moody and short tempered lead guitarist.

The band cover three tracks originally performed by 'The Blue Hearts', The Blue Hearts were a popular and influential Japanese Punk rock band in the late 80's and early 90's, with a sound not unlike The Ramones or early Jam. The Linda Linda track which was originally released on May 1st 1987 features on many of their compilation albums such as 'The Blue Hearts Box' and their first album 'The Blue Hearts released May 21st 1987. The music score, courtesy of James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), is generally very subtle and works seamlessly with the cinematography, while augmenting but not competing with the three raw punk tracks which are the focus of many a band school practice sessions. The band’s name, 'The Paran Maun' is Korean for 'The Blue Hearts' in case you are wondering, something I don't think is mentioned in the movie itself.

This movie is sure to win your heart with its no-nonsense upbeat simplicity, heartfelt delivery and charming characters, a great family movie and one that will I'm sure will strike a punk chord with those who remember the early days of Punk with fondness. Don't miss it, it's probably one of the better music movies I have seen in a long while, I guarantee you will be singing Linda Linda for days after watching it or looking for the album. A couple of interesting facts you may be unaware of: - The script for Linda Linda Linda won the Angel Award (scriptwriting competition) in Japan and the brother of the singer from "The Blue Hearts" plays the girls' teacher in the movie.

Synopsis
Three days before the schools Hiiragi-sai (Cultural festival) which includes a small rock festival, Moe the singer and guitarist of an all girl band breaks her middle finger and is unable to play. Rinko, a close friend of all the band members, tries to recruit a male guitarist replacement without consulting the others and with a complete disregard for Moe's feelings. Kei (the bands keyboard player) refuses to speak to her best friend Rinko when she hears what Rinko has done, so the band are left in low spirits with no guitarist or creative direction, With so little time left the band are forced to make a quick decision as to whether to still appear in the Rock festival. The band agrees to appear with Kei playing guitar instead of the keyboard leaving the band just in need of an appropriate lead singer.

Help eventually arrives in the form of Son, a Korean exchange student with variable Japanese language skills. Son agrees to everything even though she is not fully aware of what she has agreed to. The group select three old 'Blue Hearts' tracks including 'Linda Linda' and decide to learn these in the three days they have left; This is obviously quite a challenge, Son needs to learn the lyrics in Japanese, which is not her natural language and Kei needs to learn the guitar part on an instrument she only occasionally plays. Son rushes off to a Karaoke bar to practise her vocal and lyrics, this is quite a funny sketch, with the karaoke club employee trying to explain to Son that she can't sing without first purchasing some kind of drink, while Son maintains she doesn't need a drink and just wants to sing. The majority of the rest of the movie focuses on the girls practising at all hours of the day and night and also on their relationships with each other and in the case of Son and Kyoko, their admirers.

With such little time to prepare, the girl practice late into the night and early hours and by the third day are completely exhausted, so much so that they almost miss the rock festival as they sleep on the club room floor. On the day of the rock festival the band are already late and to make matters worse they have to get to the school hall in a torrential rain storm. Eventually they arrive, drenched, very tired and nearly 30 minutes late, the girls are told they will only have time for one track of the three scheduled. Son appears nervous but takes a deep breath and spontaneously names and introduces the band as 'The Paran Maun" whilst looking at Kei for approval.....

A charming little movie which is not as awkward and predictable as others in its genre. If you enjoyed this movie you will also no doubt enjoy Swing Girls and Fish Story.

Love Exposure Soundtrack
Ah yes the soundtrack, someone in marketing messed up. For those of you who have resorted to alcohol and major tranquilisers after spending fruitless hours searching for the soundtrack or information, your long search is at an end, there is no soundtrack. What is even more surprising and extremely annoying, it is virtually impossible to find a comprehensive artist and track listing anywhere on the entire Internet.

However before you take an overdose, I have after two days of intense investigation come up with the following tracks, these account for about 80% of the tracks featured in the movie.

Love Exposure Movie Review

Those of you who are familiar with Sion Sino's other cult classics Suicide club, Noriko's Dinner Table and Strange Circus, will find something vaguely familiar lurking beneath the surface of what is almost certain to become yet another cult classic. Love exposure is without a doubt an exceptionally well executed and edited four hour emotional and cerebral roller coaster ride through nearly every known Japanese movie genre.

From the initial opening scenes to the final closure, the movie escorts you hand in hand, through a wonderfully bazaar journey which encompasses everything from misguided religious epiphany, cults, philosophy, unrequited love and obsessive devotion through to parental abuse, sexual mutilation, gore and voyeurism. The entire epic is beautifully accompanied throughout by an eclectic and original sountrack, a selection of choral, classical and modern pieces which provoke a curiously diverse range of emotional responses. Having since discovered the movie was originally a six hour epic edited to four hours at the request of the producers, all I can say is....bring on the six hour directors cut.

The acting was a variable hotchpotch of moments which seemed dependant upon the current genre and emotional objective of the story, to be honest though, it was of a little consequence to the outcome. The movie is like an ever changing canvas, it seems intent upon inciting an emotionally introspective response, based maybe upon the viewers shallow and preconditioned attitudes to sex, religion and love. The movie will certainly shock and amuse you, those unfamiliar with Asian cinema may be left wondering what just happened to them.

The movie is supposedly based around a true story which relates to a friend of director Sion Sono who was a photographer within a possibly seedy world, the photographers younger sister apparently became a involved in a religious cult from which she was later rescued. Sino Sono makes a cameo appearance in two of the scenes; the first is as one of the five interviewers for the porn company, where he is seated on the far left of the table. The second is in the exercise yard of the cult zero rehabilitation centre, the DVD features a one hour documentary about the making of of the movie which mentions these scenes.

Waste no more time reading my pathetic attempt at a review, go rent, buy or borrow a copy, invite everyone one around to watch it except maybe your parents, especially if they think hentai is punishable by the death penalty in most countries.

Screenshots were taken directly from the DVD which I certainly recommend, I have tried to avoid spoilers but there is certainly an element of this so be warned. The DVD contains a fascinating one hour documentary which I again certainly recommend and focuses on the making of the movie; it includes interviews on set with Sion Sono and various other members of the cast. Fans of the beautiful Hikari Mitsushima will be happy to know she features extensively throughout this one hour documentary.

Synopsis
Umm I guess I better make this a brief synopsis since my preamble is already a novel.

The movie opens with Yu's mother (Mami Nakamura) making a heartfelt request of Yu (Takahiro Nishijima) to find woman who looks like the virgin Mary, Yu agrees and shortly after his mother dies. Yu's father Tetsu (Atsuro Watabe ) later becomes a priest but succumbs to sexual temptation when he meets the hedonistic Saori (Makiko Watanabe). Saori soon becomes distracted and leaves Tetsu for another man sending Tetsu into an introspective spiral of shame and guilt. Tetsu consumed by guilt and obsessed by sin, psychologically projects his failings onto Yu, insisting he repent relentlessly for his sins making Yu's life a living hell. Yu who has lived a mostly virtuous life and loves his father and wishes only to please him, is driven to commit sins to appease his father’s relentless requests for meaningful confessional.

The movie genre changes as Yu sins spiral towards perversion and he is introduced to a group who have mastered the art of up-skirt photography. Wishing only to sin and please his father, Yu becomes a master of the Art, but at the same time remembers his promise to his mother to meet his Maria (Virgin Mary). He searches for his Maria as he indulges his new found voyeuristic talents. The movie drops into a 'miracle day' countdown, when Yu will meet his Maria. His Maria to be, the beautiful 'Yoko' (Hikari Mitsushima), has suffered a life of continuous abuse and hates men, but coincidentally has recently met and befriended Saori through her neglectful and abusive father.

Just prior to 'the miracle day' meeting and yet another movie genre change, we are introduced to the psychotic Aya Koike (Sakura Ando) who also has a history of physical abuse at the hands of her father. Aya is the leader of a dangerous religious cult called ‘The Zero Church’. Aya who identifies with Yu and is attracted to him, hatches a plan to manipulate Yu into meeting Yoko in a bid to manipulate the entire family into the Zero church. If things were not already bad enough for Yu, on miracle day, we find Yu dressed in drag as 'Miss Scorpion', having lost a bet to his friends over the best up-skirt photo. On Miracle day Yu meets his Maria (Yoko) and falls in love at first sight but Yoko falls for 'Miss Scorpion' while both are manipulated by Aya from the Zero church.

The movie focuses on Yu's relentless attempts at winning Yoko's heart, against all odds and Aya’s continued manipulation of the family to bring them into The Zero Church. To describe the movie further would be a crime against humanity, so I will end here. Another one of my favourite movies from Japan and one I hope one you enjoy as much as I did. The movie will wrestle your emotions into an eventual submission and leave you begging for more.

Um. Wow. That’s pretty much all I’ve got left in my brain after seeing this still from The Housemaid, which was just released.

The film is currently at Cannes International Film Festival, where it screened yesterday (May 13). The Korean press has kept a close eye on the reaction, and particularly regarding its stars Jeon Do-yeon (who won Best Actress at Cannes for Secret Sunshine in 2007) and Lee Jung-jae. Initial press has been positive and while The Housemaid has been described as suspense thriller, it also drew laughs for its black comedy. In addition to the two leads, veteran actress Yoon Yeo-jung drew praise as the elderly housekeeper.

The cast and director gave the film’s official press conference at Cannes today, where the director explained that he was surprised when not just one but two Korean films were accepted into the festival’s competitive portion (the other is Poetry, which stars Yoon Jung-hee and Ahn Nae-sang). He also talked about the necessity for updating the film from the 1960 original, pointing out that Korea is well-known for its incredibly fast development in the past half-century, but that the central themes at the core (adultery, love, sexual relationships) are just as relevant now as they were then.

The Housemaid also released yesterday at home, and has already attracted an impressive 170,000 theatergoers in its very first day.

Oh My Lady has really stepped it up in its last stretch of episodes, which makes me happy but also a little sad that it hasn’t been this strong the whole way through. If I had to choose one or another, I suppose I’d rather a drama start off weaker and then end high (as this drama is doing), rather than starting strong and ending weak, but I like to be demanding and ask for both.

Yes, that’s the size and relative roundness of Jin-ho’s butt, in case you were wondering. And yes, that’s pretty much the expression that accompanies the grabbing of said butt. This episode brings our leads together under one roof, and the hijinks? They do ensue. So far the tropes feel familiar, other than the main twist, but the characters are interesting and well-acted, so I’m aboard the train. Here’s hoping we go to new and exciting places!

EPISODE 2 RECAP

Kae-in stands agape in front of her ex-boyfriend Chang-ryul and ex-roommate/ex-friend In-hee, stunned at their Affront to Human Decency, also known as their wedding.

Kae-in looks more hurt and betrayed by In-hee, who as her friend and you know, a human being, should seem more remorseful than if she had stolen your parking space or taken the last cookie. But before they can really have it out, Chang-ryul has security drag Kae-in and Young-sun out of the wedding.

The security team traps them in the sound booth, where of course Young-sun’s son happens to turn on the loudspeaker so that all the wedding chapels can hear Kae-in lament that the groom cheated on her with the bride, who she thought was her friend. Young-sun chimes in that In-hee’s no angel either; she’s been juggling a number of guys recently herself.

Both In-hee’s ceremony and another wedding stop in their tracks and the parties come storming over to the sound booth. Young-sun and Kae-in try to make a run for it, realizing the mess they’ve made, and In-hee comes huffing up, indignant that THEY’ve ruined HER wedding. Where do I even begin with the crazy?

Young-sun, being the only sane one here, slaps In-hee unceremoniously across the face. Nice. Back the other way? No? I’m fairly certain she deserves a second slap. Or a sixtieth.

Outside, Young-sun tries to cheer Kae-in up, but she just wants to be alone. Yeah, right after the fact is too soon to hear the buck-up-kiddos and it’s-all-for-the-betters. Kae-in trudges off to do a little moping on her own.

Meanwhile, Jin-ho has been trying to casually run into Choi Do-bin, his whole reason for coming to this fiasco of a wedding in the first place. He and Sang-jun notice someone else getting dismissed by him for trying to approach him at a non-work event, so Jin-ho decides to try a riskier tactic.

He rushes downstairs, finds the guy’s car, and crashes into it. At first I think he’s nuts (not a way to win a guy’s favor) but as it turns out, Do-bin is quite unflapped, and even recognizes Jin-ho as the architect who made a good pitch for the Dream Art Center. Jin-ho scores a meeting, and all it took was a dent in his car. Sneaky!

Back at the wedding of soulless bloodsuckers, Chang-ryul chases after In-hee, insisting that he did his part in telling Kae-in about the wedding. In-hee doesn’t believe him because she ain’t no fool, and decides to break it off and go on their honeymoon…alone. I hope you go someplace where they still have smallpox or malaria.

I have to say, Chang-ryul, while still being a dog, is definitely the more sympathetic of the two, as he is treated like a second-class citizen by both In-hee and his father, and is a hilarious wimp to boot.

Kae-in walks home, still in a daze from the events of the day. She zombie-walks through an intersection, unaware that she’s holding up traffic. The tears come flowing while cars honk at her, and Jin-ho sees her pass by.

Jin-ho and Sang-jun get back to the office, where they are greeted by a frantic Tae-hoon, who begs for his job back, offering up a carrot: he’s got a secret tip on the new museum project that Jin-ho is crashing cars trying to get. Is crazed and desperate going to be the only mode for this side character?

As Kae-in walks back home, her employee and “friend” Won-ho is hiding out from a couple of thugs who have come looking for him at her house. (Using the term “friend” loosely, as this girl seems to have surrounded herself with backstabbing vapidity and take-advantage-of-drunken-girl thievery as her friends. Between In-hee and Won-ho, who needs enemies?)

Kae-in doesn’t pick up Won-ho’s calls, but does see the collection letter once she gets home. He’s apparently borrowed the equivalent of $10,000 against the house, (don’t ask me how he managed to do so) leaving Kae-in neck-deep in debt and in danger of losing her home. Talk about a bad day.

Over at Jin-ho’s office, he and Sung-jun are getting the lowdown on the museum project from Tae-hoon. He tells them that according to his father, the head of the company who owns the museum fell in love with a han-ok (traditional Korean-style) house built by a renowned architect. He tried to hire said architect for the museum project, but the offer was declined. That architect is no longer in the picture, but the CEO still has lingering hopes for that style of architecture. Solution: if Jin-ho can get a peek at the original house that the exec fell in love with, he can design something inspired by the style, and win the contract. Ten guesses as to who the original architect is.

Kae-in broods in the dark, trying to convince herself that everything will work out. She may be on the dimmer side of Tuesday, but at least that keeps her positive and plucky rather than downtrodden.

To make matters worse, she gets a call from her father, informing her that he will be returning to Korea three months sooner than expected. Not only does this shorten her timeframe to save the house, but it seems to make her visibly uncomfortable on a personal level. One gets the impression from the very short conversation that Kae-in lives for Daddy’s approval but has yet to ever reach his impossible standards. She speaks very timidly and very formally to him, implying an emotional distance beyond the normal gruff disapproving father/underachieving daughter relationship.

In a sad little moment, Kae-in rushes over to In-hee’s empty room, forgetting for a moment the events of the day. Luckily, she does have one actual friend in the world, and Young-sun comes right over to be there for Kae-in. While unable to offer up any of her own money, Young-sun encourages her to eat up for her strength.

Sometimes I’m concerned that Kae-in is well, slow, but she’s not stupid so much as child-like, so maybe we can accept her as overly trusting, to the point of being the gullible patsy if people choose to take advantage of her. That seems to be the way that Young-sun sees her, so I’ll groove with that for a while until it starts defying all rational thought. When that happens, we will have words, Show.

We also find out from Young-sun that Kae-in lost her mother at a very young age, and her father loved his wife so much that he couldn’t face her death or the daughter she left behind. Okay, I’ve never really been good with this trope, because if you really had SO much capacity for love for another human being, how could you not have room in your heart for your own child who was born out of that love? Whatever, countless Kdramas over the past half century!

Back at the office, Jin-ho studies the few published pictures of the house, and Sang-jun arrives with his own backstory on the architect. The architect built the house for his wife whom he adored, and since her death he lives and teaches abroad, and his only daughter lives in the original house. Sang-jun thinks this’ll be a breeze, what with Jin-ho’s good looks and charm: just seduce your way into the house! He adds that since the mother was a legendary beauty, the daughter will naturally be a looker too. Jin-ho decides he’ll go the route of research, while Sang-jun should feel free to follow up on the daughter.

At home, Kae-in takes a moment to remember her mother as well, telling her that she wants her father to be proud, and is so afraid of disappointing him. She plays with a miniature replica of her mother’s rocking chair, where she used to rock little Kae-in to sleep in her arms. Scenes like this are why Sohn Ye-jin is perfect for this role. She can handle the drama and believable character pathos, beyond the cute and funny stuff.

We come back around to Kae-in in the morning, where she is speaking in a mysterious hushed tone to someone on the phone. So faced with insurmountable obstacles and debilitating self-doubt, who do you call? A phone-psychic! Ha. Bleary-eyed and dark saucers from talking all night, she asks the psychic for answers. The pc-bang-based quack blathers some obscurities about a savior who will come from the east. She asks, “Is it a man?” Psychic: “Not exactly a man.” Kae-in: “Then a woman?” Psychic: “Not exactly a woman.” Heh, wonder who that’ll be. Nice touch, to add her superstitious disposition into the mix.

She asks (just now!) how much the call costs, and at $1.50 per 30 seconds, she’s been completely had. She hangs up, just when Sang-jun comes knocking on her door, flowers in hand, ready to woo his way into the famed house.

Kae-in comes out looking like an alien-ghost, and crazily enough, the two recognize each other immediately. Sang-jun has two shocks: one at the sheer sight of her, then another when he realizes that she’s the wedding crasher from yesterday, the same furniture designer who clashed with Jin-ho over the form and function of dining tables.

Kae-in hides in mortification, but pops back out to ask if he came from the east. No, he did not, which rules him out as the foretold man/woman who will help her. Sang-jun runs off, thinking that she’s gone batty, with good reason, and that the house is a lost cause.

As if the last forty-eight hours haven’t been bad enough, Kae-in gets a call from the department store where she sells her furniture. She goes in to meet with the sales manager, and he tells her that they can no longer lease her the space due to low sales. She pleads, but the answer is no. The whole time, I can’t focus because I’m thinking, why is the manager a caricature-version of BOF’s Gu Jun-pyo, with rolls of curly hair and an over-the-top ascot-laced suit? And then he gets up, and we see that his nametag reads: GU JUN-PYO. Ha.

Jin-ho decides to cash in on his promised meeting with Choi Do-bin at the art center, but runs into him on his way out to lunch with Chang-ryul’s dad. The two exchange passive-aggressive pleasantries, and Jin-ho says he’ll come back another time. What we have gathered about Chang-ryul’s father: he was once the right-hand man at the architecture firm that Jin-ho’s dad started, he took over the firm after Jin-ho’s father died, even kicking Jin-ho and his mother out of their family home. Also, we know that he is eeevil, by the scar on his eye and other such unsubtle clues.

Sung-jun sees them pass each other, and asks Jin-ho if maybe Chang-ryul’s dad is making another backdoor deal with the museum contract, just like he did with the Dream Art Center. He asks Jin-ho not to fight to the death on this one, just for personal revenge, considering this will be a make-or-break contract for their small firm. But Jin-ho is fired up, whether for his career or for his vendetta, and plans to see it through.

Looks like Chang-ryul’s father feels equally on edge with the competition, giving Chang-ryul an evil-version of a pep talk, involving a kick in the shins, belittling, berating, and a threat to exile him to China if he loses the contract to Jin-ho. Should be a good fight, since Chang-ryul is now equally motivated to do well, even if for bad reasons.

Kae-in and Young-sun are on their way back from the department store in a truck loaded with all of Kae-in’s unsold furniture, when they see Won-ho lurking around in front of her house. It just so happens that Jin-ho is also doing some lurking of his own, trying to take some pictures of the house, to little avail since not much is striking or visible from the outside.

Won-ho sees her coming and bolts. Kae-in gives chase. Jin-ho follows. That may seem weird, but then, have you ever just started running because someone is chasing you, even if you have no reason to? Maybe it’s a reflex.

Halfway through the chase Kae-in twists her ankle on her high-heels (does she have to be both dim AND clumsy, Show?), and asks Jin-ho to catch the guy for her. He obliges and manages to corner Won-ho, as Kae-in catches up.

Won-ho admits to spending all of the money, and has no explanation or platitudes to give her. Kae-in starts off yelling, then pleading, but by the end, she feels more sorry for Won-ho, asking if he’s been eating.

They relocate to a neighborhood restaurant, where Kae-in BUYS the weasel lunch, and Jin-ho listens in on the conversation. Kae-in tells Won-ho that her dad is returning sooner than expected, and that she needs the money fast. Kae-in: “It must be pretty dire, if I listed the spare bedroom up for rent at the realtor’s office today.” At this, Jin-ho’s wheels start turning.

Won-ho finishes his meal, then says he’s going to the bathroom, and sneaks off. Kae-in, the girl who would believe the sun will rise in the south if you told her convincingly enough, lets him go, and is then surprised to find that he’s run off. Jin-ho: “Are you an idiot?” Heh, well, points for directness.

He notices that her ankle is pretty bad, so despite her protests about hospital fees, he takes her to the hospital and even pays for the visit. Kae-in is definitely wary of his motivations for being so kind, while Jin-ho tries to teach her to just say thank you and be gracious. He tells her that instead of paying him back, she could let him see the house.

Jin-ho says he’s looking for a new place and happened to overhear her conversation with Won-ho. Kae-in goes from suspicious to incredulous. A man! And a woman! Living under one roof! We can’t have that. She refuses to let him even see the place.

They’ve reached her door and Jin-ho keeps trying to convince her, to no avail. But Young-sun answers the door and as soon as she sees him, without even knowing the situation, she tells him to wait outside and whatever it is, she’ll persuade Kae-in to change her mind. Can’t say I’d do any differently if he were standing on my doorstep.

Inside, Kae-in fills her in on Jin-ho’s offer to be her roommate, and Young-sun can’t imagine why she’d turn down this perfect opportunity. She needs money and a roommate; he has money and needs a room.

Besides, Young-sun reminds her: HE’S GAY, remember? To him, you might as well be an inanimate object. Kae-in wonders if that’s really how it works, and starts to warm up to idea, as the two girls imagine Jin-ho as the picture-perfect gay roommate, cooking elaborate meals, being the best shopping companion, and even doing facials together.

This persuades Kae-in to give it a chance, so Young-sun lets him in to take a look at the house. Kae-in is still very apprehensive about him, and he’s not exactly a fan of hers either, so the two are edgy and cold to each other. But Jin-ho is struck by the house. Frankly, so am I because I dig the indoor/outdoor and modern/traditional fusion going on in that house.

Back at the office, Jin-ho tells Sang-jun that he’ll be living with Kae-in from now on. Sang-jun can’t believe he managed it, and wonders if Kae-in has lusty feelings for Jin-ho, since she wouldn’t as a single woman let just any man into her home. Sang-jun tells Jin-ho that if the situation should arise, he should just take one for the team and go for it. Jin-ho assures him that won’t be happening. Oh, you don’t even know the half of it.

Meanwhile, the girls discuss the deliciousness of Jin-ho’s butt, as Young-sun can’t get enough of this hottie that she can never have. Kae-in does agree that he has a derriere to write home about, having grabbed a handful in the previous episode.

The four of them meet at the house to sign the lease, and basically Sang-jun and Young-sun facilitate the whole deal, while Jin-ho and Kae-in remain cold and hostile towards each other. Once the seals are stamped, Jin-ho’s true colors come out, as he insists Kae-in adhere to some cleanliness rules. Kae-in, not to be outdone, says fine, then he has to abide by her spatial rules—not being in restricted areas—or else any body parts in unsanctioned areas will be lopped off.

Young-sun and Sang-jun hold them back from what would have devolved into fisticuffs, and they manage to seal the deal. Sang-jun dotes on Jin-ho as a younger brother, but his gestures, like putting his hand on Jin-ho’s knee, help to solidify the girls’ belief that they are a couple. The boys don’t notice, and go about setting up Jin-ho’s room.

And then to really solidify the misconception that they are gay, Jin-ho cuts his leg on a piece of furniture, and here are the things the girls hear from outside the room, complete with R-rated sound effects:

Sang-jun: “Take your pants off…Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle…Okay, I’m going in…”

I know this is beside the point, but there’s no way that Sang-jun would be the top in that relationship. Just sayin’.

Young-sun just thinks their relationship is adorable, but Kae-in fills her in on Jin-ho’s motel tryst with his OTHER boyfriend, Tae-hoon, a beast of a guy who he mistreats terribly, and that’s only the guys they know about, so god knows how many men he’s actually dating. Kae-in thinks she’s just going to have to set some ground rules, while Young-sun wonders when she’ll get to see the beastly one.

Over at Casa de Backstab, In-hee returns from the honeymoon to her new place, only Chang-ryul’s been living there since their not-a-wedding because his father kicked him out. They bicker and yell, and at one point they’re stripping off their pajamas while yelling, and I thought for sure it would lead to a bow-chicka-bow-wow place, but apparently their hatred runs too deep. Honestly, you guys kind of deserve each other, so I wouldn’t mind. Now whether you deserve to be happy is a whole other question.

Jin-ho takes a tour of the house, and ends up in Daddy’s office, where he sneaks a peek at some blueprints. Then, while Jin-ho fields a call from his mom, Kae-in creeps up to the room in shadow, and scares the bejesus out of him and me.

She revs up the chainsaw (HA) that she has in her hands, serving as a reminder that all body parts in violation of the rules will be chopped off. Jin-ho screams like a little girl and runs for his life, while I die of laughter and watch the scene again.

And then, the craziest thing happens. In-hee shows up at Kae-in’s house, suitcase in tow, expecting to get her old room back. Hh? Wh? She actually says that since Kae-in ruined her wedding, she didn’t really end up with her boyfriend, so the past is in the past. The past? As in YESTERDAY? Is it possible you were raised by howler monkeys?

Kae-in can’t believe she’s dared to come here, and thank god that she isn’t folding in this situation because I would have to disown her. The argument goes from icy to shouting to full-on girly hair-pulling, which gets Jin-ho out of his room to complain about the noise, since he can hear everything.

In-hee can’t believe Kae-in rented the room so quickly, and to a man, and proceeds to tell Kae-in how she should live her life! And I am totally going to reach into my tv and pull the lips right off this girl!

Kae-in counters that In-hee must be interested in her new roommate because she wants to steal another guy from her, and In-hee just says matter-of-factly that she could get any guy to say yes to her. Well, is that a thing to be proud of?

But Kae-in, confident this time that she can shut In-hee up, announces that she can try a thousand years to seduce Jin-ho. It won’t work…because HE’S GAY.

So far, having not read the novel, and staying away from any and all spoilers, the ride is mostly predictable, with the only twist being the presumption of homosexuality. But we’re only two in, so I’m hoping there are more comic surprises and new twists in story conventions to be had, as I do enjoy the characters (mostly the main four).

I’m relying on the developing relationship between the leads to be fresh and full of new problems, which I think it can deliver on. Even if this drama were lazy and rehashed Coffee Prince-esque angst, it has to diverge at some point because its premise approaches the gay question from a different angle, so hopefully they’ll be mining new territory, instead of side-stepping the issue.

Never in my mind would I have thought it was a dress from Chanel. Probably its because after I saw this, looks tacky! In my opinion, the dress is just not working on her. I'm unsure of whether I would prefer the dress runway version or the modified version on Park. Either way, the model rocked the dress better.

Super Junior to release full MV to ‘Bona Mana’ on the 12th!

Ahead of their comeback with their 4th album, Super Junior will release the full MV to the title song ‘Bona Mana’ on 12th May on their official homepage and various music sites.

It was known that the MV was shot in a set in GyeongGiDo in late April, directed by Jang JaeHyuk. The song ‘Bona Mana’ follows the genre of SJ FUNKY(SUPER JUNIOR FUNKY). And as the genre is unique to the group,there has been much interests as in how the live performance will turn out.

The full song was revealed on 10th May and it has already gone up to the #1 spot on real time muisc charts, headstarting a ‘Super Junior fever’.

Girlgroup f(x) talks about promoting in the same time period as ‘seonbaenim’ WonderGirls.

f(x) is back earlier this month with their 1st minialbum ‘NU ABO’ is currently up #1 on various album and music sites. And WonderGirls will also be back with a new album ’2 Different Tears (2DT)’ after one and a half years.

Recently in an interview with Newsen, f(x) talks about promoting in the same time period as the WonderGirls, “They are seonbaes whom we really like. Personally they are also our close friends, so we feel excited promoting together.”

Especially for member Luna who comes from the same high school as WonderGirls new member HyeRim (LiRa Art High School). Recently, their high school even posted up photos of them as ‘proud faces of the school‘.

Luna said, “I was originally really close to HyeRim.” Already the 2 are known to be close friends even before their debut, even though WonderGirls are considered seonbae to f(x) in terms of promoting, Luna can be said to be more of a seonbae than HyeRim.

Sulli also revealed that she has known HyeRim before their singer debut, “I first met HyeRim unnie at church and we became close friends. After that she got more close to Luna after they went to the same school. After she joined WonderGirls, the 3 of us will be able to meet and play.”

f(x) added, “We will promote and show our charms unique to ourselves, different from the WonderGirls.”

Back on December 9th, the retail website martzzang.com pitted TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki's 3rd Asia Tour Concert album (the Red Team) versus Big Bang 2009 Live Concert album (the Bule Team should be Blue but its in Engrish).

The battle was on who would have more album sales on the website until December 11th. Well, it seems TVXQ has overwhelmingly given Big Bang a knockout by having 95% of the total sales.

This was a smart move on martzzang.com's part, because ever since the battle was put up, fan girls of both groups immediately went to the site and started buying albums in bulk to support their favorite group. So much so that the servers crashed because it couldn't handle the volume of traffic. Because of this huge success, martzzang plans to have more battles between idols in the near future.

Unfortunately, the sales were heavily one sided. I was surprised of the huge margin in which Big Bang lost by, I thought they would've put up a better fight. There's no shame in losing though, they're still very talented with dedicated fans. As for TVXQ, even despite their current turmoil, the fans are still rabid as ever.

If you're feeling deja vu, it's not just you - fellow member Ji Sook also took a tumble only last week on Inkigayo. Now, slipping on stage period is embarrassing enough; after Inkigayo, I'm sure the Rainbow girls promised themselves to make sure not to make the same mistake. Ga-In was asked a question about Jo Kwon and their relationship in We Got married. After that they asked the rest of the Brown Eyed Girls on who they would want as husbands if they were on the show.

UEE was a guest on today's episode of KBS Champagne where she got to play the famous game, Ideal Type World Cup.

The popular After School member confessed, "I can't kiss

guys I meet for the first time. In second year of high school, I kissed someone for the first time. He was a fellow trainee. I would fool around a lot so he said, 'If you do that again, I'm going to kiss you.' So I told him, 'Do it. Do it.'"

She then went on to explain how he also betrayed her, "But out of nowhere, I couldn't get in contact with him. And I noticed that him and a fellow girl trainee were acting weird. Less than a week after breaking up with me, he started going out with that girl trainee."

She shared another different yet still shocking confession, "I've never gotten asked out by a male star."

She's definitely the ideal type for many guys so how come none of them has made their move on her?

Hip hop producer singer MC HanSai (MC한새) reveals upcoming female group Nia, who are also called the ‘2nd Brown Eyed Girls’.

MC HanSai’s agency BCR Media said on the 2nd, “MC HanSai is the main producer for Nia’s new single album.”

The group gained much attention in the indie scene earlier this year in April when they released their single ‘My Everything’ and was promoting in the HongDae region. They were also called the ‘2nd Brown Eyed Girls‘.

2 of Korea’s most popular groups Dong Bang Shin Ki and Big Bang are nominated for the 51st Japan Record Awards.

The nominee list for the awards was announced on 2nd December. Dong Bang Shin Ki are nominated for the Excellence award and Big Bang is nominated for the newcomer award. Also, GDragon’s collaboration with W-inds for the song ‘Rain is Fallin’ is also up for the Excellence award.

Both Dong Bang Shin Ki and Big Bang were awarded the Gold Artiste award previously on Best Hits Awards 2009 aired previously on 26th November.

The song nominated for the Excellence Award by Dong Bang Shin Ki is the song ‘Stand By Up’ released in July. This single sold over 200K copies and received the Gold Record from Japan Record Association. This song is nominated alongside other hits from other singers like Koda Kumi, Exile etc

T-ara will reveal 2 version of their new MV ‘Bo Peep Bo Peep’ – one for viewers above age of 15, and the other for those above age of 19.

They released MV teasers for 2 songs ‘Bo Peep Bo Peep’ and ‘Like The First Time’ for their 1st album previously on 27th November. And in particular, the responses for the MV teaser of ‘Bo Peep Bo Peep’ was overwhelming partly due to some revealing scenes of actress Jung JiAh in the tease.

With that, the full MV revealed on 30th November will include 2 versions – one for audience aged above 15 and the other one for above 19. The former will be for teenager fans, while the latter one will include a love scene.

T-ara will be revealing their first full length album.

Debuting with the song ‘Lies’ previously in July and then moving on to release ‘TTL (Time To Love)’ and ‘TTL Listen.2′, collaborations with Supernova, the group continues to receive much love as newcomers. The song ‘TTL’ has also gone up to the #1 spot on 8 music charts previously.

With that, the group will be revealing their 1st full length album coming 27th November, a week earlier than the planned reveal date.

The composers to the songs for the group’s 1st album will be Bang ShiHyuk, Shin SaDong Horangee who also did the girls’ previous hits like ‘Lies’ and ‘TTL’.

Some of the songs include dance song ‘Like The First Time’ by Bang ShiHyuk, who also did Baek Ji Young ‘Like Being Hit’, 8eight’s ‘Without A Heart’ etc; and trendy dance song ‘Bo peep Bo peep’ by Shin SaDong Horangee, who did 4Minute’s ‘Hot Issue’ and ‘Muzik’.

Singer Ivy comes out to explain the statement she wrote on her minihompy ‘Thank you Hottest’ while closing down her minihompy.

Ivy’s performance with 2PM Nich Khun previously on 21st November on 2009 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) has attracted many bashing on her minihompy by fans. In the end, her minihompy was closed down, and she left a message thanking 2PM fans Hottests which had led to another round of criticisms. .

But Ivy reveals that the reason for closing down her site is not 2PM fans, “It is very much a misunderstanding.”

Ivy said, “Even though there are fans who left hurtful bashing message on my minihompy, the message was meant for those who complimented me on the performance that day. I wanted to thank those people hence the message was posted up when the minihompy was closed down.”

Recently back promoting as 6 members with album ‘1:59PM’ , after member JaeBum left the group in September, 2PM performed for ‘Feel Korea in ShangHai: K-POP Night’ on 25th November.

Many fans were seen hopping on vans and taxis following the group around. Also fans were seen holding placards like ‘2PM=7′ during the group’s performance.

The 2PM members spoke up about their 1st album title ‘1:59PM’, “It means that we are waiting for JaeBum hyung. Even though we are waiting for him, because he is not around now, we are not 2PM.” And when asked, “Does it mean that the group is not in perfection since JaeBum is not around now.” They answered, “Yes.”

They said that this was the idea that producer Park Jin Young came out.

“We were discussing about this with Park JinYoung producer, and we talked about the idea of 1:59PM. We thought it is a good title for the album since we are waiting for JaeBum hyung.”

And about their comeback title song ‘Heartbeat’, it shows off a different charms for the boys who have been known as the ‘beasty idols’ doing acrobatic performances before. The members revealed that the comeback performance concept is rather experimental this time.

TaecYeon said, “Originally the word beast is not a really complimentary word for guys, but we are happy that our fans used it for us because they like the side that we show during our promotional activities. But now with the song ‘Heartbeat’, we are being called ‘zombie-dol (zombie idol)’.

Just 1 year into debut, the group won the Artiste of the Year award amongst other awards on 2009 MAMA, but the boys revealing that they are still not there yet for their overseas advance.

The members who received an unexpectedly warm welcome in China said, “Even though we received much love in Korea itself, we are curious how we will be received overseas. Even though it is a shame that we will be returning on the 26th, we will visit again on 1st December for WonderGirls’ first independent concert in ShangHai as guest appearances.”

The boys were also asked about Nich Khun’s performance with Ivy during 2009 MAMA last weekend. Ivy had appeared on stage with a vampire concept and had put up a sexy performance with Nich Khun but due to fans’ unhappiness on the over-suggestive performance,she has to even close down her minihompy.

[NEWS] KBS, MBC and SBS Will Not Give Out Awards For Year-End Music Festivals This Year

The 3 major broadcast companies in Korea – MBC SBS KBS – will not have any award ceremony for their year-end music festivals.

MBC said on 23rd November, “This year alike, we will not be giving out awards for our year-end music festivals to the singers.” MBC started having their ‘Teens Singer Music Festival’ which they will give out awards every year. But from 2006, they decided to do away with the awards and named it as ‘MBC Music Festival’, and have singers showcase various performances during the event.

This goes the same for KBS, they will not be giving out awards to singers this year. A KBS rep said, “Like the past 3 years, we will not be giving out awards for our year-end music festivals. The event, to take place in December, will be prepared as a special broadcast programme.”

KBS started with the annual ‘KBC Music Awards’ from 1984, but starting from 2005, they did away with it and came up with ‘KBS Music Festival’ instead which does not give out any awards.

And SBS is the last of the 3 companies do with away with the awards. This year, SBS will not be giving out awards for its year-end music festival.

A SBS rep said, “We will not be giving out any special awards to the singers this year. It will be made into a special program in the form of a festival this year.” SBS has been carrying out their annual ‘SBS Gayo DaeJun’ from 1991 till 2007 where they would give out awards to singers.

But they stopped giving out awards from 2008.

With that, this will be the 4th year where MBC, KBS and SBS will not give out awards during year-end music festivals. They will be just music festivals where singers can meet with fans and TV viewers putting up various performances.

Locsin rose to prominence after being cast as one of the lead stars in the fantasy-themed television series Mulawin in 2004. Soon after, she starred as the superheroine Darna in the TV adaptation of the popular Mars Ravelo comics hit.

Locsin top-billed in several films and is known as the screen love interest of Richard Gutierrez and Dennis Trillo. In mid-2007, Angel left her mother studio, GMA Network and signed an exclusive contract in ABS-CBN despite her booming career in GMA. She told in an interview with Boy Abunda that she is no longer happy in GMA and she is looking forward to have a better career in ABS-CBN.

Check out the highly-anticipated new series from ABS-CBN called “Lobo” which marks Angel Locsin’s very first teleserye since she transferred to the kapamilya network.

This is a great teleserye to watch out.

The trailer itself is indeed very great and inetersting and Angel Locsin improved a lot, acting and personality. I like the soundtrack too. I know this will make big to Primetime.

Many criticize her for her decision but as we know we have no right to tell her what she has to decide in her career. Well anyway, I wish her good luck on her career with ABS CBN and more projects to come.

I can't wait to watch her first series "Lobo" (she-wolf) with Piolo Pascual and Dimples Romana whom I admire most.

[NEWS] Rain Looking Into Several Hollywood Scripts

The doors of Hollywood are continuing to open for Korean superstar Rain who is currently looking through several scripts for his next big screen appearance, according to his agency on Friday.

“He is currently looking at about six scripts but has not reached any sort of decision yet,” an official at J.Tune Entertainment said. “He is taking his time to decide, looking through each one carefully with an open mindset.”

Rain had mentioned during a recent press conference that working on his upcoming film “Ninja Assassin”, where he takes on his first-ever lead role in a Hollywood pic, had opened many opportunities for his acting career in the U.S.

“Ninja”, set for a worldwide release on November 26, was produced by Joel Silver of the “Die Hard” and “Lethal Weapon” series and the Wachowski Brothers, famous for “The Matrix” trilogy. Director James McTeigue is most well known for his directorial debut pic “V for Vendetta”.

Meanwhile, speculation is mounting amongst Korean netizens that the 27-year-old singer and actor has been cast to appear in Hollywood’s adaption of popular online game “World of Warcraft”. Rain had mentioned in several interviews that he is in talks to appear in a series movie whose production cost is set at over 170 million dollars.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, appeared in several dramas and movies in Korea before making his Hollywood debut in 2008 film “Speed Racer”.

[NEWS] SS501 Rocks Taiwan With New Album

Five-member boy band SS501 is taking the Taiwanese music industry by storm, sweeping Taiwan’s music charts with their newly released mini-album “Rebirth”.

The album has been ranked No. 1 in album sales on China’s largest online music website, BOOKS.COM for four consecutive weeks and placed first on G-Music Asia Chart and Five Music Asia’s Current Chart for two weeks straight immediately after the album’s release on October 30.

They also topped the RBT Charts of Taiwan’s top three telecommunication companies including Chunhwa Telecom, Far East Tone Net and Taiwan Mobile two weeks in a row.

The boy band, back to the Korea’s music scene after a 19 month break, took their first win on major broadcaster KBS’ music show “Music Bank” last week with their title song “Love Like This” from the album.

They have been one of the most popular K-pop acts in Asia since their debut in 2005 and have had numerous hits singles in Korea and Japan.

[NEWS] SM Entertainment Incensed with TVXQ Trio at MAMA

The inaugural MAMA awards might have been over just recently, with the TVXQ trio of Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu making an appearance and receiving the “Best Representative for Asia” award on behalf of TVXQ.

But in a interview with SM Entertainment right after the MAMA was concluded, a representative said that they had no right to do so:

“The trio had no right to receive the award on behalf of TVXQ. The awards organizer should give the award to a liaison on behalf of SM Entertainment instead. This is unacceptable since they had only invited the 3 members.”

In response, a MNET representative stated:

“We invited all 5 TVXQ members to the MAMA awards ceremony beforehand. But only the trio responded to our request while the other two did not. We don’t see any problems with the trio receiving the award on behalf of the whole group.”

Heo EunAh, President for Korea’s Association of Image Consultants International mentioned “During introduction, action speak louder than words, When you use the palm it helps 84% of the time, the back of the hand 52% and fingers 28%” and “therefore Super Junior’s ‘We are Super Junior’ is the best introduction.”

Girl group Kara’s ‘goddess’ Park Gyuri has raised a few eyebrows with her recent confession about her past kicking the Ex-President’s grandson. On the 14th broadcast of Star Golden Bell when asked the question “Who have you violently kicked in a fit of rage?”, Gyuri shockingly answered “I kicked Ex-President Kim Young Sam’s grandson”.

Park Gyuri further explained “I went to the same kindergarten as Ex-President Kim Young Sam’s. He used to like me a lot but he met a pretty girl from another classroom, so after she came he dumped me.”
She said “It was shocking at such a young age; I connected with that guy. He was 5 and I was 6.”

This has led to viewers asking about the identity of the kindergarten they attended.

The program listing for the 2008 KBS Gayo Daechuk is out and the Wonder Girls are going to be in quite a few performance items (pic credit: cutegiurl).

The Wonder Girls will be out with Big Bang for the opening line dance.

In a performance titled Diva Show, the Wonder Girls will be performing Destiny’s Childs Survivor. Son Dambi and After School will be doing Lose My Breath, Seo In Young and Ha Joo Yeon (Jewerly) will be performing Bottle Pop and 4 Minutes (Madonna). The Wonder Girls, Son Dambi, After School, Seo In Young and Ha Joo Yeon will then finish the program with a outro.

That will be part 1 of the show. The following is part 2.

The Wonder Girls will then be performing Nobody again, I think normal version. Then there will be a special Mamma Mia musical stage involving the 2 members of Wonder Girls. Sun Ye and Ye Eun will perform Honey, Honey. This will be followed by Park Jung Ah, Baek Ji Young, Jang Yoon Jung, Kim Jong Kook, Kim Jin Ho, Dae Sung performing Mamma Mia. Then everyone that has performed in this item will come together and perform Dancing Queen and Waterloo.

At the end, Wonder Girls will perform Flying Into The Deep Blue Night with Park Jung Ah. During Sunset Glow with Lee Moon Sae and Big Bang, all performers including the Wonder Girls will join in to close out the night.

It was a night of remixes at the 2008 SBS Gayo Daejun held last night at Kintex in Ilsan, Seoul. Billed as the biggest year-end music festival because of its impressive lineup, the Wonder Girls was among the many performers on the night. Most of the performers did remixes of their songs on the night.

The Wonder Girls performance was pretty much kept in secret with no mention of what they would be doing while there were no pictures from the afternoon rehearsals. I was expecting the unexpected from the Wonder Girls. They appeared in Part 2 of the music festival and surprised with a unique opening which saw them dressed in Marie Antoinette inspired outfits. They then did a little dance before retreating behind the curtains and then returning to the stage in military styled outfits. They did a futuristic remix of Nobody which we heard a little at the 2008 GDA and it was pretty good with new dance cheoreography. Nice, refreshing and power performance.

Earlier on, Sun Ye had her Diva stage together with Tae Yeon and Davichi. Decent performance with a cover of Destiny Child’s Stand Up For Love. Sun Ye actually didn’t have much lines as the other 3 but she did great belting out whatever little lines she had. Love her long hair and glittery dress.

Looking forward to the KBS and MBC Gayo Daejuns.

And once again for the second year running, I find KBS Gayo Daechuk rather dull. Too many trot stages and old school stuff like what wonderkid said. Many of the singers appeared like more than twice for different items. The Wonder Girls appeared for close to 5 times on the night. But for Wonderfuls, it was great to see the Wonder Girls appear so many times though. Hopefully, all of them ended the night without any health issues. 1 more day to the end of 2008.

Thanks for those who pointed out. Pictures are from rehearsals. There’s ABSOLUTELY no way Sun Ye is going to appear like that without makeup.
